The Charles Lea Center celebrates John's graduation from the Medicaid Alternative Pathways to Independence (MAPS) Program, which helps Tennesseans with intellectual and developmental disabilities build independent living, employment, and community engagement skills.

The Charles Lea Center is proud to celebrate John on his graduation from Tennessee's MAPS (Medicaid Alternative Pathways to Independence) Program, a milestone that reflects his dedication, perseverance, and commitment to achieving greater independence.

For everyone who has had the privilege of supporting John along the way, this moment is about much more than completing a program. It is a celebration of personal growth, new experiences, meaningful accomplishments, and goals achieved. Throughout his time in the MAPS Program, John embraced opportunities to learn, develop new skills, build confidence, and prepare for the future he envisioned for himself.

While we will miss being part of John's journey, we are incredibly proud of everything he has accomplished and excited to see what comes next.

How the Tennessee MAPS Program Supports Independence

The Medicaid Alternative Pathways to Independence (MAPS) Program is an innovative Tennessee initiative designed to help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities gain the skills, resources, and confidence needed to live more independently. The Charles Lea Center manages the program in partnership with the Tennessee Department of Disability and Aging, helping participants prepare for greater independence at home, in the workplace, and throughout their communities.

Designed for young adults who have graduated from high school or are within three years of graduation, the Tennessee MAPS Program provides individualized, person-centered support focused on:

  • Community navigation and independent living skills

  • Employment exploration and career development

  • Assistive and enabling technology solutions

  • Personalized goal setting and future planning

  • Community engagement and relationship building

Through these services, participants are empowered to discover their strengths, pursue personal goals, explore employment opportunities, and become more active members of their communities.

A Success Story That Reflects the Purpose of MAPS

John's graduation is a powerful example of what can happen when individuals are provided with the tools, support, and opportunities needed to reach their full potential. His success reflects the mission of the MAPS Program: helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities build skills, increase confidence, and create pathways toward greater independence.

"When people ask what we're doing in Tennessee, John's success is the answer," said Sandra D. Mooney, Tennessee Director of Innovation Coordination Services. "His achievement demonstrates the life-changing opportunities that MAPS creates and the potential that can be realized when individuals are given the tools, support, and encouragement to pursue their goals."

At its heart, the MAPS Program is about more than services and supports. It is about creating opportunities, fostering independence, encouraging community inclusion, and helping individuals build meaningful futures. Every participant's journey is unique, and every success story reinforces the importance of investing in people and their potential.

Celebrating John's Next Chapter

John's graduation is a meaningful accomplishment not only for him, but also for his family, supporters, and everyone who has been part of his journey. His determination and growth inspire us and remind us why this work matters.

We are grateful to have been part of John's story and proud to celebrate this important milestone with him. His achievements demonstrate the possibilities that emerge when people are empowered to pursue their goals, develop new skills, and build a more independent future.

Congratulations, John! We are honored to celebrate your graduation from the Tennessee MAPS Program and look forward to seeing all you accomplish in the years ahead.
