Prior to 1991, many services needed by people with disabilities were only paid for through Medicaid when that person lived in an institution. Once Federal Medicaid Waiver programs were approved, people were allowed to receive needed services in their homes and in their communities and Medicaid would pay for those services. SCDDSN operates three specialized waiver programs in South Carolina, the MR/RD Wavier, the HASCI Waiver and the PDD Waiver.
