The Charles Lea Center encourages people to get out in the community and enjoy what Spartanburg has to offer them. One of the many programs the residential program encourages people to participate in is the College of Educational Enrichment.
The College of Educational Enrichment opened its doors the fall semester of 2006. The program offers people with disabilities and special needs a college experience at the University of South Carolina Upstate. Individuals take one class per semester in a subject of their choice that is taught by professors at a level that meets their needs. Once individuals have completed 16 courses they will receive an Associate of Independent Education (AIE) Certificate during commencement exercises. Classes meet once a week for eight weeks and focus on a range of topics including math, reading a newspaper, aerobics, functional reading, beginning computer skills, and Spartanburg history.
Orientation for the falls semester was held September 26 and classes began the following week. Each class costs $50; however, scholarship opportunities are available through The Charles Lea Center Foundation.
